WORTH PASSING ALONG: Teenager’s Internet Socializing Not A Bad Thing

November 20th, 2008 Ben Murphy Posted in Current Events, Technology, thefatherlife.com | No Comments »

This week, the NY TIMES ran an article entitled TEENAGER’S INTERNET SOCIALIZING NOT A BAD THING. It’s based on a new report out from the MACARTHUR FOUNDATION.

“It may look as though kids are wasting a lot of time hanging out with new media, whether it’s on MySpace or sending instant messages,” said Mizuko Ito, lead researcher on the study, “Living and Learning With New Media.” “But their participation is giving them the technological skills and literacy they need to succeed in the contemporary world. They’re learning how to get along with others, how to manage a public identity, how to create a home page.”

Lily On the Fly: Streamlined Shopping & Cooking

Recently we at The Father Life were introduced to a product that peaked my interest, and, given the opportunity, I was more than willing to sample it. The particular product caught my interest primarily because it appealed to my biggest weakness - my stomach.

My first job was at a steak and seafood restaurant back home, and I eventually became a line cook before earning my college degree and leaving the restaurant business behind. Perhaps because of this–or because of my family’s ability to create spectacular meals–I have always enjoyed a good meal. Read the rest of this entry »

Be Active, Be Fit, Be A Leader

Today there is more pressure than ever on men to perform in hostile environments. Couple that with the absolutely wonderful blessing of fatherhood, and stress levels can reach almost unbearable levels. We must balance being top performers in our chosen professions while at the same time giving our families the attention they want and deserve. Read the rest of this entry »

NFL Power Rankings: Week 12

NFL Power Rankings

I know the Titans still haven’t lost, but how awesome would it be if the Super Bowl was New York versus New York. In the Jets case, it would be like a Hollywood movie ending. The wily, old veteran comes out of “retirement” to lead a scruffy team to the Super Bowl. In the preseason, the Giants obviously didn’t get as much love as they deserved, even though they were the defending champs, but they were expected to make the playoffs. Nobody picked the Jets to do very much this year. Other than Brett Favre and Kris Jenkins, the team didn’t look all that much different from the squad that only won four games in ’07. Geography, Fun, & Remembering Family History

Geography, Fun, & Remembering Family History

Over the past 10 years, we’ve moved from coast to coast in the US and it’s been fun, exhausting and at times stressful on our family and friend connections. I’ve written previously about ways to enhance connectedness within our immediate family and wanted to also offer up something which helps to enhance connectedness with the various places you (and your family) have been. At the same time, I want to provide a fun and interactive way for your family to get to know their history, community, town, city, state, country, continent, and the world (and even solar system and universe) which they live within. Enter Google Earth. Read the rest of this entry »

THE TROUBLE WITH BOYS - Peg Tyre Interview

November 17th, 2008 Ben Murphy Posted in Current Events, Home, thefatherlife.com | 1 Comment »

A couple of years back, investigative journalist, Peg Tyre, wrote a big story in Newsweek titled The Trouble With Boys. In that article, Tyre wrote about how, “by almost every benchmark, boys across the nation and in every demographic group are falling behind.” It caused quite a stir and many, frankly, were outraged. Wasn’t everyone working hard to make girl’s education equal? How had boys fallen off the cliff?

However, Tyre was onto something, and just this month she came out with a follow-up Newsweek story titled Struggling School Age Boys followed by the release of her new book The Trouble With Boys.

We at The Father Life release a regular podcast in partnership with host Mike Austin (from RadioDAD.com). In our most recent podcast, Mike interviewed Peg about her new book and what, exactly, is the trouble with boys. We think this is an issue and a conversation worth passing along…

A Father’s Voice: More Than Just A Stroller

November 17th, 2008 Jeremy Schneider Posted in Home | No Comments »

A Father’s VoiceIt seems like such a little thing. The double stroller for my children, 3-year old twins, is sitting in the basement taking up valuable space, but I just don’t know what to do with it. It has been in our family for over three years now and somehow shoving it in the garage doesn’t seem a just ending for this device that has been with us for so long. It used to live in the back of our Outback and was there when we needed it. It has been to Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Florida and even Ecuador with us, not too mention the mall, the park and hundreds of other places. Read the rest of this entry »

Recipe: Chicken Cordon-Bleu

Chicken Cordon-Bleu article imageThough I’m aware of how very close Thanksgiving Day is, I’m uncertain whether sharing my family’s traditional feast is relevant to the world at large. Our meal, which bears a precise resemblance to our Christmas dinner, consists of the usual things you’d expect in a ritualistic gorging of a plentiful harvest. Read the rest of this entry »
